Druim na Gearr Leacainn

We walked into the hills to the northwest of Ormsaigbeg yesterday, onto the western end of the ridge called Druim na Gearr Leacainn.  The last of the heather is still in flower and would have given the landscape plenty of colour, but the weather stayed dull, with an increasingly gusty wind as the predicted storm came in from the west.

One can see from this picture why this year's ling as been disappointing. Some of it is already finished, the flowers faded, some is in flower, while a fair proportion of the plants themselves is dead. A couple of years ago we were worried about the amount of dead heather, but there seems to have been no acceleration in its loss.

There are fine views in all directions from the top of the ridge. This one looks northwest, with Beinn nan Ord at left, Grigadale farmhouse the white spot in the distance, with Loch Caorach in front of it, and the lump of Coire Bheinn (Sgurr nam Meann on the map) to its right.
