Life in the Sunshine

We haven't seen many red admirals this year but now, suddenly, in these sunny October days, they're out in force.  The plant that's attracting them to our garden is this gilia, which we were sold as something else.  We haven't regretted the gilia in the least: its mass of lilac-coloured flowers appear late in the year, last a long time, and are every good as buddleia for attracting insects.

Many thanks to the Raptor for this picture of a goldfinch feeding off a teasel.  It's a great time of year to be a goldfinch: there are a mass of other seeds on the menu, including those of the thistles and related plants.

  1. That flower looks like Verbena Bonariensis.. I could be wrong, though

  2. Many thanks. I'm sure you're right about it being verbena - we've now looked it up.
